How to hide your WiFi name from your router

Almost all Wi-Fi routers and other Wireless Access Points broadcast o transmit their network name by default. The Wi-Fi name also called the service set identifier (SSID) helps people to see and connect to the network.

If the Wi-Fi name is not broadcasted, one would have to know the name of the network and have to set up manually to connect to it.

It a good decision to keep your SSID hidden, it does not mean that its s complete security measure, but it somehow prevents to some extent people from connecting. However, a person with the right tools and enough time can still sniff the traffic coming from the network and find the SSID

The steps below vary from depending on the router you are using. However, if you understand how to do it in one router, it is very easy to do it in another

Login to your router. To do this, you have to enter the IP address of your router, usually labeled at the back of the router in your browser

The most used default gateway is 192.168.1.1. However 10.0.0.1 or 192.168.0.1 are also used.

Below are ways on how to disable SSID broadcast for most of the routers

  • Go to Settings > Wireless/Wi-Fi > Set Broadcast SSID to Disabled
  • Clcik save
  • Go to Settings > Wireless > Extended Network.
  • Select Hide SSID broadcast
  • Open the Wireless tab 
  • Disable SSID broadcast s
